Clara Spilliaert
Trianal

Clara Spilliaert’s contribution to RHIZOMA is a work on paper entitled Trianal that is linked to the installation of the same name. It sheds light on the often unspoken, everyday topic of going to the toilet.

In earlier times, a mixture of forest leaves was used as bedding for stables – and as toilet paper. Soft oak leaves were particular favourites, eventually making their way into the cesspit along with human waste. This organic, intimate connection with nature stands in stark contrast to modern industrial toilet paper, where the only remaining link to nature is found in embossed patterns of flora and fauna. This inspired Spilliaert to create an artwork on paper, the size of a single sheet of toilet paper, featuring a deeply personal embossing.

This piece, which seeks to make the original connection with nature tangible once again, is displayed at carefully selected locations – where the intimate and the public intersect – within the MASEREEL building.
