Locations
The inaugural edition of RHIZOMA, Our Future Is To Live With Bruises, connects five indoor and outdoor locations, within walking distance of each other. The designated walking route follows a loop-shaped trail of about 5 km. To experience the artworks as well as the trail and its locations in an enjoyable way, it is best to plan for half a day. We advise you to start between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. so that you have enough time to see everything at your leisure.
MASEREEL – centre for contemporary art is the starting and finishing point of RHIZOMA.
Founded in 1972, with special roots dating back to the mid-1960s, MASEREEL is a centre for contemporary art that combines an artist-oriented artistic programme with an international residency programme for artists and critics, with a special focus on printed matter at large. Since March 10, 2025, the center has carried the name MASEREEL, emphasizing its rich history and identity as a dynamic arts institution. For more info, click HERE.
Over paved roads you then walk towards the former Klaveren Drie dance café – a place that caused a furore especially in the 80s and 90s and is currently waiting for a new destination. You also pass Atelier Grafiek – where it all started for MASEREEL in the 1960s.
The third location is Heemerf De Waaiberg, an open-air museum where several traditional buildings from the wider area were brought together by the municipality of Kasterlee and the local heritage association. Heemerf De Waaiberg offers a glimpse into the architecture and daily life of the Kempen region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Every second Sunday of the month (except July and August), they organise an Open Heemerf.
The St Willibrord’s Church, located in the heart of Kasterlee, blends centuries of history with architecture. Originally built in the 16th century, the church underwent several significant renovations to achieve its current form. After a devastating fire in 1735, it was rebuilt and expanded in a neo-Gothic style between 1848 and 1851. This 47-meter-high three-aisled cruciform basilica features striking brick architecture, pointed arch windows, and a monumental eastern facade. The interior displays a harmonious blend of pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and intricately detailed capitals.
At the intersection of Masereeldijk and Heiblok lies a triangular field, De Punt. Throughout the year, it serves as a community square, and once a year it also welcomes the famous Kabouterdag (Gnome Day). For RHIZOMA, the significance of this location and its multifaceted use will be further explored and integrated, enriching the square’s role as a dynamic gathering place within the community.
RHIZOMA’s looping trail concludes at MASEREEL, and this both inside and outside. Don’t forget to visit the bookshop too!
